ARTstor now allows for group exporting into powerpoint!

ARTstor has released a new feature to Instructor-level users that streamlines the process of exporting images and descriptive data from ARTstor. You may now export image groups to Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 in just a few clicks. When viewing an image group, look for the Export to PowerPoint icon (  ) in the utility bar or click Tools > Export to PowerPoint. The resulting PowerPoint file will include:

  • A title slide displaying the name of the image group.
  • Individual slides for each image in the group, in the order in which they appear in the image group.
  • ARTstor descriptive data for each image, appearing in the notes field of each slide.
  • Embedded hyperlinks in each image that will launch the ARTstor Image Viewer when clicked in presentation mode (requires web access).

ARTstor has instituted certain export limits during the Beta period and will be evaluating the performance of this new feature over the fall semester. For more information, visit ARTstor Help (http://help.artstor.org/wiki/index.php/Presenting#Export_to_PowerPoint_.28Beta.29) or contact User Services at userservices@artstor.org

UCI Libraries on Second Life!

In 2007 the UC Irvine Libraries purchased and developed an island in the virtual world of Second Life (SL).  Second life is an interactive space where content is created, built and owned by its residents.  So far Anteater Island has been used for social interaction, events, as an aid to learning programming and computing, and as a site for some other instruction. Second Life may be used as a place of work, object of study and site of intellectual content.   We are interested in helping to make Second Life a more useful space reflecting interests of the UCI community of a curricular and research nature.  Please note:

  1. There is a learning curve to become familiar with the SL platform and how to structure your learning and teaching space.
  2. Land parcels on Anteater Island in Second Life are available through the library. These parcels are available to UCI faculty on a quarterly land lease (gratis) for the purposes of instruction or research.
  3. The UCI Libraries can discuss your ideas with you, based upon their experience give you feedback on successful SL endeavors, and lease you a parcel of the island for an academic term for you to use.

The library cannot accommodate all requests but are looking forward to learning about your ideas and potential needs, the assignments you may make for a class currently being held or are planning for the future.  We invite you to visit Anteater Island at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Anteater…and/106/160/23 to see the landscape and the current library presence there.  Just remember, it is a work in progress, to be refined and developed as islands evolve in the natural “first life.”

Please let your liaison librarian know of your interests at your earliest convenience.

UCI Libraries New Website

UCI Libraries has launched a new web site available at http://www.lib.uci.edu/

While our old web site worked fine, we identified areas in which we could improve through user testing. The new site aims to help you find what you need quickly. We also paid special attention to your students’ needs by providing them with just-in-time help and easy access to the resources they need to help them succeed. Our new site features: – easier access to our most popular tools and resources – RSS feeds of library news, events and new materials – more prominent information about our collections – streamlined and more graphically-interesting design.

Please feel free to send us any comments and/or suggestions by filling out the short survey available from our new home page.

Springer EBook Textbooks

Members of the UCI Faculty,

Many of you are now aware of the (2005-2009) Springer ebook content that the UC Libraries have licensed and provided for your use. We hope that you have found it useful and as always welcome your feedback.

In light of rising textbook costs and the convenience of electronic textbooks, we wanted to share that part of the Springer ebook collection includes texts that you could use for classes: [http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/springerebooks/Textbooks_Since_2005.xls].

If you are exploring new textbooks for your classes, and would like tooffer your students the convenience of a free electronic textbook, we welcome you to check this list to see if there is anything useful. To review all of the available ebooks from this publisher, visit http://www.springerlink.com.  They may offer ebooks that are suitable for instruction, but which they have not classified as textbooks.

In addition to online access, students can also purchase black-and-white printed copies of the 2005-2009 ebooks through the Springer MyCopy service available on the Springer website. This service is available for books with up to 832 pages and each book would cost $24.95 including shipping and handling.

If you are already using a textbook published by Springer, and it is available online, please feel free to share the link with your students and inform them of the MyCopy option for inexpensive print copies. You can also post the link to your course website or eReserves. We hope that this enhanced convenience will be beneficial to you and your students, and we would very much like to hear your experiences.

For more information on the UC Libraries Springer Ebook Pilot visit:

And if you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Thank you,

Virginia
